People always think good quality studio photos must be photographed with professional lighting equipments such as mono lights or flashes. Actually you can achieve good lighting with some simple table lights and/or floor lights. The only ceiling of a photographer is lacking creativity. So please try hard to be creative with what you have and continue to shoot.

Taekwondo

My son has been learning taekwondo for more than half year. I still remember he cried in the second class and did not want to continue. However, he soon starts to love it after several classes and always asked me if we will go to taekwondo class every time I picked him up from daycare. He is still an entry level learner, however, he can do several kicks and punches. I shot this group in my newly set-up studio in the basement. Hope you enjoy them.

100-day baby photo

After two children were born in my family, I started to photograph baby/kid. It is totally different from shooting wedding or portraiture for adults, who usually can follow your instructions. The most frustrated experience of shooting a baby is that he/she might not want to cooperate or be photographed. It is a challenging for both photographer and parents. New born baby is much easier to work with since we just want to keep him/her sleeping all the time. And he/she does not mind being posed. Older babies have their own minds for many things including smiling. So for many times, after we set up the background, lighting, props and camera, we (including parents) need to entertain baby, too. The patience of babies is very limited. We have to capture as many photos as we could when they are in good mood. However, it is also a very rewarding experience to photograph lovely babies and kids. They are cute and innocent. They grow so fast and change almost everyday. I am so happy that I can save the sweet memories of the babies' growth for parents.

100-day after birth is a very important day for Chinese people. We usually celebrate it by having a feast with relatives and close friends. Of course photos of the baby on that day is one of the most important things. Decades ago when I was a baby,100-day photo usually was the first photo of a person for the whole generation.

I am pleased to photograph Emma in my home studio. I got several studio lights, backgrounds and props for this shooting since I wanted to do better than before. The shooting did not last very long for total about 2 hours. I managed to get some good photos for the parents and myself. Now I feel confident that I can do better for next shooting with experience from this session.

Romance at Princeton

Outdoor maternity portrait

Princeton is not only a perfect location for wedding photos but also great for outdoor portrait. Both classical and modern architecture style can be found there. I photographed portrait, engagement, child and wedding session in the campus. This time we had a outdoor maternity portrait session in the early spring day.

New Orleans - people

Had a brief trip to New Orleans. It is totally different comparing to NY/NJ. Besides different style buildings and delicious food, people in New Orleans are especially interesting.

It is a great feeling to photograph a lovely 1-year old girl. Her parents prepared this photo session so well with a lot of gifts, toys and decorations. She was so happy and kept laughing throughout the whole session.

Cherry Blossom-2016

Two cherry trees in front of my house finally reached peak yesterday. They blossom earlier than last year due to warm winter. I cannot wait to get up early this morning to have some photos of flowers. Surprisingly most flowers are still there even though there was a severe thunder storm and strong wind last night. It is too bad that it was very cold and windy outside so that I cannot get some portraits for my family. Below are just some photos of cherry blossom of 2016 season without people. Enjoy!

NYC engagement session

Pooja just moved to New York to live with her fiancee from west coast. They are getting married soon. Before the splendid wedding in India, they need some engagement photos in the city as her fiancee lives here for many years. They found me through web search engine. I am so happy to work with such a wonderful couple. We spent over four hours in the city although it was very chill on that day. I am so thankful that Pooja did not mind shooting in the wind with just a dress. We both are very happy when we finally have so many beautiful photos. It is going to be a sweet memory for both them and me.

Wedding at Highland Country Club

I am so lucky to have this chance to work with Sijia and Bin for their wonderful wedding. The venue locates in upstate of New York, just besides Hudson river. It is not far from Bear Mountain, where I have been to many times. I do not know some place like this beautiful country club is just several minutes drive away hidden in the valley. The wedding was full of joy and happiness. I even did not feel I have already shot for more than 8 hours when it came to the end. What a wonderful memory! I cannot wait to shoot their post-wedding session.

Engagement session in NYC

Aalhad and Shalini found us through internet. They will soon get married back in India. They need some photos for their BIG day. We chose DUMBO and Brooklyn Botanical Garden as our shooting sites. This session started at 8:30 am. I seldom shoot in the early morning. But I decide to do that more in the future as the light condition is perfect. And there is not many people around, which is a great plus.

I met the bride in Starbucks of North Edison. I knew from that moment that we would have a wonderful photo session. She asked for advices from how to get beautiful photos to choosing locations and time. That is why and how the great photos are generated. Be prepared. I have been to this garden many times. Each time it offers me new experience. It is such a beautiful garden, and very suitable for portraiture and engagement, even wedding photos. It shows different colors and layouts through all four seasons. I wish I could have a photo session here someday.

Outdoor session in Old Westbury Gardens, Long Island

Have you ever been to Old Westbury Gardens in Long Island? If not, I highly recommend it. It is such a beautiful garden that has been shown in several movies. I am so glad we have this chance to photograph a wonderful couple in the garden. Even the weather was cloudy, we managed to finish the two-hour shooting before it rained.

Maggie & Ting

Maggie and Ting got married a year ago. I am the photographer when they got their marriage license from New York city hall. Maggie always wants to get some wedding dress photos in beautiful deep fall, yet we finally made it happen after one of the biggest snow storm hit central park. Maggie and Ting are so photogenic. They prepared this shoot for a long time. It is such a pleasure to work with the couples.

Fey and Tim

Fey is a New Yorker, while her husband works in CT. They spent a lot of time on the Metro-North train to meet each other on weekends. That is why she picked Grand Central Terminal as one of her favorite locations. She works in a library, so she also wants some photos in New York Public Library, which she thinks is the most beautiful one. Unfortunately, the library closed on the photographing day. I am a little bit disappointed, too. I always want to shoot inside New York Public Library. Hope next time I can do this.

J&F pre-wedding

Jada got to know me on a wedding of last year in Boston. She wanted me to have some photos before her wedding back in China. We planned it for a long time. She did a lot of homework, from posing to clothes, as you can see from the final photos. Just like an old saying, the devil is in the details. We postponed the shooting for several times due to the weather condition, but it is worth the wait.

Besides wedding and engagement, I also photograph portrait. Several months ago, a friend of mine ask me to help photograph a bellydance troupe of Columbia University. She is also a member. I was glad to have the chance to shooting some indoor portraits with artificial lighting, which is always one of my most interested projects. I used two or three monolights with big softboxes to achieve the final results. The shooting was full of pleasance.

Y&J’s wedding

Jie found me through an internet forum. I am honored to photograph his wedding, which was in Columbia, Maryland. We planned to travel to Washington DC for some post-wedding shots, while worrying about the crazy weather predicted by weather forecast. When I passed by Baltimore on Friday evening, there was a severe thunderstorm. We all prayed for a good weather on the next day, and it worked! The wedding day was full of sunshine, and we had a great trip to DC.

I have been to Boston many times for wedding photography. This is a little bit different from others I shot before, cause the lovely couple will have a pre-wedding session in the morning of the wedding day. I usually start my shooting since preparation of the couple. After that, we just go to either church or hotel for ceremony followed by reception. Time for photographing couple is very limited, and we usually do not go very far from the wedding location. This time we had a whole morning to some beautiful locations that the couple like. And yes, Boston is different from New York City. We had a great time at the harbor area, then went to Harvard. The wedding is great, too. Simple and elegant.

After several postpones due to crazy spring raining, we finally had a cloudy sky. Maggie, my lighting assistant, and I came down from northern NJ to beautiful Princeton campus. I have been there many times, sometimes just touring, other times shooting portraits or wedding. So I am kind of familiar with many spots good for a wedding dress shot. But what surprised me is the new academic building almost completely constructed by steels and glasses. It is so modern like an art piece. I am very glad I can shoot a lovely couple there. I love Princeton campus, cause it gives me so many new experiences every time being there.

It was a hot summer day. And it was noon in Central park. The very bright harsh sunlight made this wedding ceremony the most difficult one for me. Shakespeare Garden is a beautiful wedding location, not far from the castle. Jill did not like posing. She wanted me to only record the true and natural moment. I guess I did a not bad job. She is beautiful bride.

Yes, I was lazy on updating my blog. My parents in law stayed with us during this summer. We tour them around while I was shooting weddings, portraits, kids and some landscape. OK, time to catch up.

Yaping and Jun were attending an academic conference in Providence, RI. They traveled from Nebraska all the way to east coast. Isn’t it a great idea to have the wedding photos in New Port? I was so happy to photographing the young couple, even I have to drive up from NYC area in the morning and drive back to NJ in the same day. Congratulations to Yaping and Jun! Enjoy the photos.
